Harvey

September 6 - 22, 2024
Tickets $25-$30

Elwood P. Dowd insists on including his friend Harvey in all of his sister Veta’s social gatherings. Trouble is, Harvey is an imaginary six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. To avoid future embarassment for her family—and especially for her daughter, Myrtle Mae—Veta decides to have Elwood committed to a sanitarium. At the sanitarium, a frantic Veta explains to the staff that her years of living with Elwood’s hallucination have caused her to see Harvey also, and so the doctors mistakenly commit her instead of her mild-mannered brother. The truth comes out, however; Veta is freed, and the search is on for Elwood, who eventually arrives at the sanitarium of his own volition, looking for Harvey. But it seems that Elwood and his invisible companion have had a strange influence on more than one of the doctors. Only at the end does Veta realize that maybe Harvey isn’t so bad after all.

All Roles

Any

Willing to be considered for any

Mrs. Chauvanet (F 55- 75)

Society Matron who is friends with Elwood and Veta. The Grand
Dame who does not like surprises. As aristocratic as a countess. -may be doubled in some combination

Dr. Chumley (M 50 – 70)

Head of Chumley’s Rest and world-renowned psychiatrist. He is
supremely concerned about his reputation and place in the world. He has withdrawn from the
day-to-day affairs of the sanitarium, in part due to fatigue. A carefree figure like Elwood
presents an alluring puzzle to him as does the mysterious figure of Harvey.

Nurse Kelly (F 22-35)

The lead nurse at Chumley’s Rest. She adores her bosses professionally
while harboring feelings towards Dr. Sanderson. However, she feels it would be inappropriate
for her to make the first move. A highly intelligent and adept figure, she can maneuver through
the chaos of a sanitarium with apparent ease (even if it is driving her crazy inside.)

Elwood (M 35-55):

“For years I was smart. I recommend pleasant” Perhaps the warmest man
you will ever meet. While he may see a six foot and a half tall white rabbit, he may be the most
down to earth person as well. He views everyone he meets as a friend. He loves his sister and
his niece, and he truly wants what makes them happy.

Miss Kennedy (F ANY)

The housemaid -may be doubled in some combination

Lofgren (Cab Driver) (M 30-60)

A friendly but impatient cab driver roped into Elwood’s saga at
the end. He delivers one of the classic mini-monologues of 20th Century American theatre.

Wilson (M 25- 55)

Orderly and Strongarm at Chumley’s Rest. He is fiercely loyal to his bosses.
Despite his brusque manner, he is devoted to his job and cares about his patients. Myrtle Mae
presents an exotic figure of attraction.

Dr. Sanderson (M 35-45)

The junior psychiatrist at Chumley’s Rest. He is very confident in his
work despite being fresh from medical school. He has a genuine care for his patients. He also
has his eye on Nurse Kelly, but he feels it would be inappropriate to show.

Mrs. Chumley (F 45- 75)

Dr. Chumley’s wife. A warm person who might have a bit of social
climbing tendencies. Affable and patient (to an extent unless she is going to be late for an
event.) -may be doubled in some combination

Judge Gaffney (M 55- 75)

The buttoned-down family lawyer for Elwood and Veta. He takes
himself and his job very seriously. He likes and respects Elwood and Veta, but Harvey’s
presence in their lives frustrates him too.

Myrtle Mae (F 18-25)

Elwood’s niece and Veta’s daughter. She loves her mother, but she can’t
understand why she has tolerated Harvey’s presence for so long. She is perhaps a rebel at heart
and chafes at her mother’s traditional view of the world. Wilson, the orderly, catches her eye
because he represents something different from what she has lived so far.

Veta (F 45-65):

Elwood’s elder sister. Harvey’s presence in the Down household exasperates her
because she wants to find an appropriate suitor for Myrtle Mae, her daughter. She deeply loves
her brother. A bit old fashioned and traditionalist, but she still has a warm heart.
